Beginner's Introduction to Crystals

Crystals are minerals formed naturally in the earth over millions of years. Each type has a unique chemical structure that gives it its shape, colour, and energy. Many people use crystals for their believed energetic or healing properties — from reducing anxiety and improving focus, to attracting love or abundance.

You don't need to be spiritual to enjoy crystals. Many collectors simply appreciate their natural beauty. Others use them as mindfulness anchors — a physical reminder to pause and reflect. There is no right or wrong way to connect with a crystal.

Jess's note: I've been working with crystals since 2018 and the one thing I always tell new customers is — trust your instinct. If a crystal catches your eye, there's usually a reason for it.

Types of Crystals We Carry

At Affinity Crystals, every piece is hand-selected across six categories:

Carved crystals

Carved

Shaped into spheres, animals, towers, and more. Carved crystals concentrate energy in a specific form. Great for display and intention-setting.

Polished crystals

Polished

Tumbled or shaped into smooth pieces — palm stones, hearts, eggs. Easy to carry daily. Softer energy, good for beginners.

Crystal accessories

Bracelets

Bracelets, pendants, and jewellery made with genuine crystal beads. Wear your crystal's energy throughout the day.

Raw display crystals

Raw Display

Unpolished clusters and points in their natural state. Powerful energy, striking display pieces. Ideal for the home or office.

How to Choose Your Crystal

There are two approaches — and both work:

1

Choose by intention

Decide what you want to work on — love, protection, abundance, clarity, sleep — and look up which crystals are associated with that intention. Use the table in Section 4 as a starting point.

2

Choose by attraction

Simply browse and notice which piece you keep returning to. A crystal that draws your eye or feels warm in your hand is often the right one for you at this time — even if you can't explain why.

How to Cleanse & Charge Your Crystals

Crystals absorb energy from their environment. Cleansing removes built-up energy so your crystal can work at its best. Do this when you first bring a crystal home, and regularly after that.

Moonlight

Place crystals on a windowsill or outdoors overnight under the full moon. Safe for almost all crystals. Best done monthly on the full moon.

Sage / Palo Santo

Pass your crystal through the smoke for 30–60 seconds with the intention of clearing. Effective and quick. We stock both in our Wellness range.

Singing Bowl

Place the crystal inside or near the bowl and play for 1–2 minutes. Sound vibration clears stagnant energy. Gentle on delicate pieces.

Selenite Plate

Rest your crystals on a selenite slab overnight. Selenite is self-cleansing and will clear surrounding pieces — no effort required.

Running Water

Hold under cool running water for 30 seconds. Natural streams are best, tap water works too. Not safe for soft crystals — avoid Selenite, Malachite, Pyrite, and Kyanite.

Sunlight

A few hours in morning sunlight charges many crystals. Note: Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Citrine, and Fluorite will fade in direct sun — use moonlight instead.

Everyday Crystal Care

Keep away from harsh chemicals

Remove crystal bracelets before swimming, showering, or applying perfume, sunscreen, or cleaning products. Many crystals are porous and will absorb chemicals or lose their polish.

Store carefully

Keep crystals in a soft pouch or separate compartments. Harder crystals (like Quartz, 7 on Mohs scale) can scratch softer ones (like Calcite, 3). Avoid storing in direct sunlight long-term.

Set your intention

Hold your crystal, take a breath, and set a clear intention for what you'd like it to support. This is especially powerful right after cleansing. Repeat whenever you feel you need a reset.

Cleanse regularly

If you use a crystal daily (especially for emotional or protective work), cleanse it at least once a month. Display pieces in calm spaces need less frequent cleansing.

Common Questions

How do I cleanse a new crystal?

Cleanse a crystal as soon as you bring it home, then regularly after that. The safest general methods are moonlight overnight, sage or palo santo smoke for 30 to 60 seconds, a singing bowl played for one to two minutes, or resting the piece on a selenite plate overnight. Selenite is self-cleansing, so it needs no cleansing itself.

Which crystals should not be put in water?

Avoid water with Selenite, Malachite, Pyrite and Kyanite. These are soft or reactive and will dissolve, pit or lose their polish. For those pieces use smoke, sound or a selenite plate instead. Most quartz-family crystals tolerate a brief rinse in cool water.

Which crystals fade in sunlight?

Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Citrine and Fluorite all fade in direct sunlight. Charge those in moonlight instead. Other crystals are fine with a few hours of morning sun.

How often should I cleanse my crystals?

If you carry or wear a crystal daily, especially for emotional or protective work, cleanse it at least once a month. Display pieces sitting in a calm room need it far less often.

How do I choose my first crystal?

There are two approaches and both work. Choose by intention, deciding what you want to work on such as calm, protection or focus, and picking a crystal associated with it. Or choose by attraction, browsing until one piece keeps drawing your eye. Beginners often find polished palm stones and bracelets easiest to live with.

Can I wear a crystal bracelet in the shower?

No. Remove crystal bracelets before showering, swimming, or applying perfume, sunscreen or cleaning products. Many crystals are porous and will absorb chemicals or lose their polish, and elastic cord degrades much faster when it is repeatedly soaked.

What is the difference between cleansing and charging a crystal?

Cleansing clears energy the crystal has picked up, and is what you do first. Charging restores it, usually with moonlight, sunlight for the crystals that tolerate it, or a selenite plate. In practice most methods do both at once, which is why moonlight and selenite are the usual recommendations.
