How to Choose Your First Crystal
The short answer: choose the crystal you keep coming back to. In our eight years running Affinity Crystals in Chinatown, Singapore, the piece a first-time visitor picks up twice is almost always the one they take home — and the one they're happiest with. Attraction matters more than any list of properties. As we like to say: crystals seek owners.
Start with how it will be used
Before properties, think about form. The same stone behaves very differently in your life depending on its shape:
- Tumbled or polished stones — small, affordable (usually under S$20), easy to carry in a pocket or bag. The best first purchase.
- Bracelets — worn daily, so the crystal stays with you. A custom bracelet also lets you combine stones for your specific intention.
- Raw clusters and specimens — for the home or desk. Beautiful as display and traditionally used to anchor the energy of a space.
- Carved pieces — spheres, towers and animal carvings sit between jewellery and display; many collectors start here.
Common first crystals and what they're known for
- Rose Quartz — the classic first stone. Associated with love, self-compassion and gentleness.
- Amethyst — calm, restful sleep and clarity of mind. A favourite for bedside tables.
- Clear Quartz — known as the "master healer"; traditionally believed to amplify intention and pair well with any other stone.
- Citrine — the merchant's stone, associated with abundance and confidence. Very popular in Singapore.
- Black Tourmaline or Black Obsidian — grounding and protection; obsidian Pixiu bracelets are a Chinese-culture classic for wealth.
Buy from somewhere you can see the stone
Photos flatter crystals. Colour, clarity and weight are hard to judge online, and unfortunately dyed or synthetic stones are common in the market. Visiting a physical shop lets you hold the piece, compare a few, and ask questions — and a reputable seller will happily tell you when a stone is heat-treated or dyed. (Yes, this is partly a pitch to visit us at 150 South Bridge Road — but it's true of any good crystal shop.)
Don't overthink it
There is no wrong first crystal. Pick the one that catches your eye, learn how to cleanse and care for it, and let your collection grow from there. If you'd like guidance in person, drop by our Chinatown shop — we love helping first-timers find their piece.
