Crystals and the Five Elements: Reading Your BaZi Chart
In BaZi, crystals are matched to the five elements (五行) by colour and material: green for Wood, red and purple for Fire, yellow and brown for Earth, white and metallic for Metal, black and blue for Water. The element your chart needs is not always the one it's missing — that's what a reading determines.
This is the question we get most often in the shop, usually phrased as: "I'm missing Water, so I should get black stones, right?"
Sometimes. Often not. Here's the actual picture.
The five elements, quickly
BaZi (八字, "eight characters") maps your birth year, month, day and hour into a chart built from the five elements: Wood 木, Fire 火, Earth 土, Metal 金, Water 水.
They interact in two cycles. Generating (相生): Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water, Water grows Wood. And controlling (相克): Wood breaks Earth, Earth blocks Water, Water puts out Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal cuts Wood.
Your chart has a balance — some elements strong, some thin, some absent entirely.
The mapping
Crystals are assigned to elements primarily by colour, with some weight given to material and formation.
木 Wood — greens
Green aventurine, malachite, nephrite jade, moss agate, green fluorite. Associated with growth, expansion, new starts.
火 Fire — reds, oranges, deep purples
Carnelian, red jasper, garnet, sunstone, amethyst. Associated with visibility, drive, expression.
土 Earth — yellows, browns, ochres
Citrine, tiger's eye, yellow jasper, picture jasper, petrified wood. Associated with stability, resources, follow-through.
金 Metal — whites, greys, metallics
Clear quartz, selenite, pyrite, hematite, howlite. Associated with clarity, structure, decisiveness.
水 Water — blacks, deep blues
Black tourmaline, obsidian, sodalite, blue lace agate, aquamarine, smoky quartz. Associated with flow, adaptability, reflection.
The part most guides skip
Here's where the internet gets it wrong, confidently and constantly.
The element you're missing is not automatically the element you need.
BaZi works on a concept called 用神 — the favourable element. It's the element that brings your specific chart into balance, and identifying it depends on your Day Master (日主), how strong or weak that Day Master is, and how the rest of the chart supports or drains it.
Two people can both be "missing Fire" and need completely different things. One might genuinely benefit from Fire. The other might have a weak Day Master that Fire would drain further, and actually need Wood to feed it first.
Adding an element blindly because it's absent is the most common mistake we see people make — usually after reading a free online calculator.
So what should you actually do?
Three honest options, depending on how deep you want to go:
- Casual: pick by intention rather than element. What are you working on this year? Choose a stone that reflects it. This is a perfectly reasonable way to buy a crystal and nobody should make you feel otherwise.
- Curious: learn your Day Master and rough chart balance, then pick within that. Enough structure to be meaningful, no appointment needed.
- Specific: get your chart read properly, identify your 用神, and choose accordingly. This is the only route that gives you an actual answer rather than a guess.
How this works at the shop
We read BaZi in-store — $35 for a single question (15–20 minutes), or $90 for an hour. We work out your chart, identify what it actually favours, then match stones from what's in stock rather than from a colour chart. Bracelets start from $10, or there's a $288 package covering the reading and a matched piece together.
Bring your birth date and time of birth if you have it. Time matters — it sets the hour pillar, and without it a quarter of the chart is missing.
Common questions
What are the five elements in BaZi?
Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金) and Water (水). Your birth date and time map onto eight characters built from these, and the balance between them is what a BaZi reading interprets.
Which crystal matches which element?
Broadly by colour — green for Wood, red and purple for Fire, yellow and brown for Earth, white and metallic for Metal, black and deep blue for Water. Material and formation also carry weight in some traditions.
Should I wear the element I'm missing?
Not necessarily. BaZi uses the favourable element (用神), which balances your specific chart. That is often different from whichever element is simply absent. Determining it requires reading the whole chart, not just spotting gaps.
Do I need my exact birth time?
For a full reading, yes — the hour pillar is one of the four pillars. Without it a reading can still be done, but a quarter of the chart is unavailable and the interpretation is correspondingly less precise.
