Understanding the Four Pillars: Year, Month, Day and Hour
A BaZi chart has four pillars: Year (roots, ages 1 to 10), Month (self, 11 to 30), Day (output, 31 to 50) and Hour (legacy, 51 onwards). The Day Pillar matters most because its Heavenly Stem is your Day Master, the one element that stands for you.
If the Five Elements are the ingredients, the Four Pillars are where those ingredients are organised into a story with a beginning and an end. Every BaZi chart has four pillars, worked out from your birth year, month, day and hour, and each one governs a theme of life and a rough age range.
Year Pillar: roots (ages 1 to 10)
The Year Pillar reflects where you come from: family background and the environment you grew up in, conditions that were decided before you had any say. This is the pillar most people already know a little about, because your zodiac animal comes from the Year Branch. But the zodiac is one character out of eight, a small part of the full chart and not the whole of it.
Month Pillar: self (ages 11 to 30)
This pillar is often called the "career palace", and for good reason. The Month Pillar shapes how you present yourself to the world, your instincts about ambition and direction, and a big stretch of early and mid adulthood: studying, entering work, and the years you really start shaping who you are. In many charts the Month Pillar also has an outsized effect on the strength of the Day Master, because it reflects the "season" of elemental energy you were born into.
Day Pillar: output (ages 31 to 50)
The Day Pillar is the heart of the entire chart. The Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar is your Day Master, the only element in the chart that stands for you, rather than your surroundings or your relationships. Every other pillar is read relative to this one element: does it support the Day Master or weaken it, does it help or clash?
This pillar governs the prime of your career, and the decades most people feel they are living their "main character" story: career peaks, partnerships, and the stage where what the earlier pillars set up finally shows its results.
Hour Pillar: legacy (age 51 onwards)
The Hour Pillar is the quietest pillar in early life and becomes the loudest in later years. It relates to children, circumstances in later life, and everything you build that outlasts your working years: reputation, legacy, the second half of the story. It is also the pillar that needs the most precision, because it depends on your exact birth time, not just the date.
Why accuracy matters
This is a question I get almost every day: "If I don't know my exact birth time, does it really matter?" For the Hour Pillar, yes. Even one hour's difference can give you a completely different Earthly Branch. And if you were born in Singapore, or are checking a chart against Singapore birth records, true solar time correction matters too: the clock time here differs from true solar time by roughly an hour, and that gap can be the difference between one branch and the next. It is a detail I apply in every chart reading, because getting the Four Pillars right is the foundation for everything else.
Reading the pillars together
A single pillar never tells the whole story. A strong Month Pillar with a weak Day Master may describe someone who looks like they had an easy start but is quietly depleted inside. A modest Year Pillar with a powerful Hour Pillar often describes someone whose best chapters are still ahead, not behind. The real craft of BaZi is not memorising what each pillar means on its own. It is reading how the four interact, together with the Luck Cycles layered on top, decade by decade.
Next, I'll go one level deeper into what each pillar is made of: the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches themselves.

Common questions
Which stage of life does each of the Four Pillars govern?
The Year Pillar is roots (ages 1 to 10), the Month Pillar is self (11 to 30), the Day Pillar is output (31 to 50) and the Hour Pillar is legacy (51 onwards).
Does it matter if I don't know my exact birth time?
Yes, for the Hour Pillar. Even a one-hour difference can give a completely different Earthly Branch. In Singapore, clock time differs from true solar time by roughly an hour, so a true solar time correction is needed.
What is the Day Master?
It is the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar, the only element in the chart that stands for you. Every other pillar is read relative to it.
