Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches Explained

Every character in a BaZi chart is either one of ten Heavenly Stems (your visible, conscious energy) or one of twelve Earthly Branches (the hidden, unconscious layer). Each pillar is one stem plus one branch, which is why a chart has eight characters.

Every character in your BaZi chart comes from one of two systems: the ten Heavenly Stems or the twelve Earthly Branches. Each pillar is made of one stem and one branch, which is why a chart has eight characters in total: four pillars, one stem and one branch each.

Once you understand what each system stands for, the rest of BaZi starts to make sense.

Heavenly Stems: the side you show

The ten Heavenly Stems represent your outward, conscious energy: the qualities and tendencies that you, and everyone around you, can see on the surface. Each stem is one of the Five Elements in either Yang or Yin form, which gives ten stems in total: Yang Wood, Yin Wood, Yang Fire, Yin Fire, and so on for each element.

Yang stems tend to be more active and outward. Think of Yang Wood as a tall tree growing straight up. Yin stems tend to be softer and more adaptable. Yin Wood is more like a vine, flexible and good at finding a way around obstacles. Same element, different way of showing up.

Your Day Master, the one character in the chart that stands for you, is always a Heavenly Stem. It is the only part of the chart that is about your core identity rather than your circumstances.

Earthly Branches: the side you carry

The twelve Earthly Branches are the hidden, unconscious layer. They correspond directly to the familiar twelve zodiac animals (Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig), but in a full BaZi chart each branch does far more than mark your zodiac year.

Here is what most people do not know: every branch contains one, two or even three "hidden stems" inside it. A branch can carry one dominant hidden element plus one or two secondary ones. This is why two people born in the same zodiac year can have very different charts. Their other three pillars, and the hidden stems inside each branch, are rarely identical.

The branches are also where much of a chart's "drama" happens. Branches can combine (合) to form or strengthen an element, or clash (冲) to bring friction, change or the unexpected in a particular year or life stage. Reading how branches interact within the four pillars, and how Luck Cycles and annual pillars combine or clash with the original chart, is an important part of judging timing, not just describing personality.

Stems are the surface, branches are the depth

A useful way to think about it: the stems are what you show the world and what people notice first. The branches are what is really operating underneath: your instincts, your private tendencies, and hidden elements that come to the surface in particular years.

That is why reading a chart is never as simple as "add up the elements and see which is most". A branch holding a hidden stem that matches your Useful God can be hugely influential, even if that element is barely visible on the surface of the chart. Reading the relationship between "hidden" and "visible" takes training, and the judgement to tell when a hidden stem is quietly doing more than anything on the surface.

Putting the two together

Each of your four pillars is a stem-and-branch pair. The stem tells you the outward energy of that stage of life, and the branch tells you what lies beneath, including the hidden stems that simple readings miss. Reading the four pillars together is what makes BaZi a real system and not a guessing game, and why a full chart reading goes much deeper than a one-line zodiac summary.

A proper BaZi reading takes every hidden stem, every combination and every clash into account, not just the surface zodiac. Get in touch to book a full chart reading.
