Chakra Stones 101: Which Crystal for Which Chakra
Chakras are seven energy centres running from the base of your spine to the top of your head, each traditionally linked to a different part of life — safety, creativity, willpower, love, expression, intuition, connection. Crystal workers pair a stone with each chakra based on colour and traditional meaning. Here's the short version of each, with real stones you can shop by chakra.
You'll see "chakra stones" everywhere in the crystal world, but most explanations either drown you in Sanskrit or skip the part that's actually useful: which stone, for which chakra, and why. Here's the plain version.
The seven chakras, briefly
- Root (base of spine) — safety, stability, being grounded in your body
- Sacral (lower belly) — creativity, pleasure, emotional flow
- Solar Plexus (upper belly) — willpower, confidence, personal power
- Heart (centre of chest) — love, compassion, connection to others
- Throat — communication, speaking your truth
- Third Eye (between the brows) — intuition, insight, seeing clearly
- Crown (top of the head) — spiritual connection, the bigger picture
A stone for each chakra
These are the traditional pairings — the ones you'll see repeated across most crystal references, ours included.
- Root — Black Tourmaline, Hematite, Smoky Quartz. Heavy, dark, dense stones. Worn low, close to the body, for grounding.
- Sacral — Carnelian, Sunstone. Warm orange stones for creative and emotional flow.
- Solar Plexus — Citrine, Tiger Eye, Pyrite. Yellow and gold stones, traditionally tied to confidence and drive.
- Heart — Rose Quartz, Green Aventurine, Rhodonite. Pink and green stones for love, in every sense of the word.
- Throat — Sodalite, Blue Lace Agate, Larimar. Blue stones, worn as a pendant or necklace near the throat itself.
- Third Eye — Amethyst, Lapis Lazuli, Labradorite. Indigo and violet stones for intuition and clarity.
- Crown — Clear Quartz, Selenite, Super 7. Clear or white stones, often the ones people reach for during meditation.
Jess's note: you don't need one stone per chakra to start. Most people find one or two chakras that a piece is clearly speaking to — Solar Plexus and Heart are the two we get asked about most in-store — and build from there rather than trying to cover all seven at once.
How to actually use this
Wear or carry the stone, ideally near the part of the body its chakra sits at — a pendant for Throat or Heart, a bracelet for anything you want with you through the day, a piece by your bed or desk for Root or Crown. There's no wrong way to start; the traditional placement is a starting point, not a rule.
Not sure which chakra your situation actually calls for? Browse the shop by feeling instead — it's organised by what you're after (Calm, Confidence, Protection and so on) rather than by chakra name, which is usually the faster way in if you're new to this.
Common questions
Do I need to know my chakras to buy a crystal?
No. Most customers come in with an intention — calm, confidence, protection — rather than a chakra name, and that works just as well. The chakra system is one way to organise stones, not a requirement for using them.
Can one crystal work for more than one chakra?
Yes, plenty do — Clear Quartz in particular is treated as a general amplifier across all seven. The pairings above are the traditional primary match for each stone, not the only one.
What's the difference between a chakra stone and any other crystal?
Nothing structurally — it's the same stone. "Chakra stone" just describes the traditional role it's been assigned based on colour and meaning, not a different category of mineral.
